GREENSKINS 25 REVIEW

This years staging of the Greenskins will go down as one of the most dramatic yet. Across three days of golf, hangovers, and heroic collapses, the competition had everything — tight scores, course variety, controversy, and unforgettable stories.

The Greenskins – Tightest Finish Yet

The final scores told their own tale. From top to bottom, only 8 points separated the field (69 down to 61), perhaps the clearest sign yet that the handicap committee earned its pint this year.

Toby "expect the unexpected" Garrioch shot the lowest score on Day 1 but the highest score on Day 2.  Three time winner Jamie Thomson going home to the wife and kids with a wooden spoon.

Initially, Hoddo was declared the champion after storming home with 38 points on Day 2. However, a post-weekend review of the scorecards unearthed mistakes on two cards, crucially involving both Hoddo and Rich. Once the dust settled, it was Richard Davison who was officially crowned champion on 69 points — his first Greenskins title, and one that will forever carry a whisper of controversy.  Congratulations Rich!

Friday at Turriff

Turriff welcomed the Greenskins in fine style — a cracking course in superb condition, with greens so fast that several hopefuls managed to putt straight off the practice green before even teeing off. Once the real action started, the scoring was excellent, though the course proved a proper test if you strayed behind the trees. A few members of the group even introduced a Greenskins first — sipping Malbec out on the fairways, adding a touch of class (or chaos, depending who you ask) to the day.
🏆 Longest Drive: Ross — courtesy of Jamie being just one yard into the rough.
🏆 Nearest the Pin: Stu — but only after Jamie’s footsteps were literally needed to prove whose ball was closer.

Saturday at Royal Tarlair

The Saturday at Royal Tarlair will be remembered as much for the heroic hangovers as for the golf. Many arrived on the first tee still tasting last night’s indian/whisky/pints, and unsurprisingly, the Day 1 leaders struggled to repeat their hot starts. This opened the door for the chasing pack, who clawed their way back into contention on a course that punished anything loose and rewarded those stubborn enough to grind through the pain.
🏆 Longest Drive: Toby — with a solid, straight drive that outlasted everyone else’s hungover swings.
🏆 Nearest the Pin: Andy — a beauty on the signature 13th, finishing just a few feet away.

The Legends - The One Day Showdown

The Sunday “Legends” event once again proved that reputations mean nothing when the hangovers kick in. The one-round shootout is all about finishing strong — if you score well here, you’re a Legend.

This year, Toby Garrioch added his name to the roll of honour, winning his first Legends title with 34 points. It capped off his rollercoaster weekend perfectly, bouncing back from his Day 1 disaster at the Greenskins.

The scores were close throughout, with just 13 points separating the entire field. Magroo (32) and Ross (31) pushed hard but couldn’t quite catch Toby.

The biggest story? The dramatic reversal of fortunes for Rich and Hoddo. Having finished 1st and 2nd in the Greenskins, they limped home 8th and 7th in the Legends.

Sunday at Cullen

Cullen, was as described, quirky! — blind tee shots, criss-crossing fairways, and greens tucked away behind cliffs. The chaos suited the final-day “Legends” showdown, where anyone could rise or fall in an instant.

The first group out quickly found themselves tested not just by the course, but by four Australian tourists ahead who seemed far more interested in taking photos than playing golf. Bags left on the wrong side of the greens and long pauses for posing sparked rising frustration (and a few muttered words not fit for print).

As if that wasn’t enough drama, Hoddo, locked in the hunt, suddenly abandoned ship and marched back to the clubhouse for urgent toilet relief. We’ll never know how he might have finished had he played all 18, but the mystery only adds to Cullen’s legend.

As for the Longest Drive and Nearest the Pin? Well, after two nights of heroic drinking, the group was far too hungover to even agree on which holes should count. The first group gave it some thought and then realised they had run out of par 3's to choose from!  A true Greenskins moment — competition abandoned, survival prioritised.

Final Thoughts

Greenskins 2025 gave us a champion crowned twice, courses that swung from polished to chaotic, and the full spectrum of golfing drama. The Legends added another chapter, with Toby seizing glory while others wilted.

The scoring committee has promised tighter checks in 2026 to ensure no more mistaken winners… but then again, would it really be the Greenskins without a bit of drama?

The countdown to Greenskins 2026 is already on — and if history has taught us anything, it’s that nobody will predict what happens next.
